What is archaeology? How did modern Chinese archaeology develop over the past century?
Yang Jianwu pointed out that in 1921, the first archaeological excavation was carried out at the Yangshao Village site, marking the birth of modern Chinese archaeology and the discovery and naming of the Yangshao culture, which is known as the “Holy Land of Chinese Archaeology”. From the archaeological excavation of Yangshao culture in 1921, to the first Sino foreign joint archaeological project, Zhoukoudian Site, and then to the first archaeological work organized and implemented by a national academic institution – Yin Ruins… Yang Jianwu recounts the century long history of modern Chinese archaeology.
Yang Jianwu introduced that the “Chinese Civilization Exploration Project” is the largest comprehensive and multidisciplinary national level major project in China to date. It was established in 2002 and has been celebrated for its 20th anniversary this year. It confirms that Chinese civilization has a history of over 5000 years through a series of major archaeological discoveries and multidisciplinary comprehensive research. It broke through the shackles of the “three elements” of civilization and proposed a Chinese plan for judging the standards of civilized society: firstly, the development of production, the increase of population, and the emergence of cities; The second is the continuous intensification of social division of labor and social differentiation, resulting in the emergence of classes; The third is the continuous strengthening of power, resulting in the emergence of monarchy and the state; The fourth is to use the emergence of a country as a symbol of entering a civilized society.

This proves that Zhejiang is the source of China’s 5000 year civilization, the world’s 10000 year rice farming and agriculture, the source of China’s celadon, and the pinnacle of Jiangnan culture Leading the way in ocean development. Yang Jianwu emphasized that the next step is to accelerate the implementation of the Zhejiang Archaeological “Qixing” Plan, the “Double First Class” Creation Plan, the New Era Zhejiang Cultural Research Project, and the Digital Integration Technology Innovation Project.
