Today (October 15th) morning, “Learning Confucianism in Modern Times-A Special Exhibition to Commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Shen Cengzhi’s Death” was held in Jiaxing Museum. A total of 170 exhibits on Shen Cengzhi’s family, being an official, making friends, achievements, etc. are displayed in the exhibition, showing the name of “being a dutiful son for the family, being a pure minister for the country, and being a pioneer in the world” of the late Qing Dynasty.
According to reports, Shen Cengzhi, a native of Salt Guan in Haining, was born in Beijing in the 30th year of Qing Daoguang, and was a scholar in the 6th year of Guangxu (1880). He was the official in charge of the punishments department, the provincial judge in Jiangxi, the education promotion ambassador in Anhui, the administrative envoy in Anhui, and the nursing governor in Xuantong for two years. He resigned from his hometown, went north when he was in zhang xun restoration, and was awarded the gift of Shangshu. He died in Shanghai apartment in the 11th year of the Republic of China at the age of 73. He experienced the Reform Movement of 1898, the Westernization Movement, zhang xun restoration, the Revolution of 1911, the New Culture Movement, and witnessed the great changes in China. As a master of Confucianism in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, Shen Cengzhi made academic contributions to geography, law, medicine, epigraphy, calligraphy, religion and so on. Wang Guowei, the “master of Chinese studies”, called him “a scholar who has accumulated the academic achievements of the Qing Dynasty for 300 years and carried forward the past into the future”.
