On March 30th, “Asking about Yuanmu-Huang Xiaoming Woodcarving Art Exhibition” opened in Wulin District of Zhejiang Museum. In the exhibition, 34 masterpieces (groups) of Mr. Huang Xiaoming, the master of arts and crafts in China and the representative inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage “Dongyang Woodcarving”, were exhibited, presenting an exquisite world of woodcarving for the audience.
Mr. Huang Xiaoming has been working as an artist for nearly 40 years, and has created a series of new woodcarvings, such as bamboo slips, surreal woodcarvings, multi-layered woodcarvings and sketching woodcarvings. Each piece of work he created not only bears the traditional imprint of Dongyang woodcarving, but also shows his strong personality of independent thinking, making him one of the most representative figures of Dongyang woodcarving. He once copied the Qianlong throne of the Imperial Palace in the Palace Museum and was the first Dongyang woodcarving artist to hold a solo exhibition in the National Museum.
At the opening ceremony, Mr. Huang Xiaoming donated his work “Morning”, a woodcarving hanging screen in Dongyang, to Zhejiang Museum. The composition of this work is based on the focus perspective method, drawing lessons from the strong brushwork of oil painting, and vividly expressing the texture of Tibetan robes and the texture of characters with exquisite knife techniques, thus laying a “surrealism” technique.
In order to protect and promote traditional culture, Zhejiang Museum has launched a series of special exhibitions of China arts and crafts, which are represented by masters, and comprehensively introduced the artistic achievements and life course of China arts and crafts masters and inheritors of national intangible cultural heritage in various fields such as bamboo, jade, lacquerware, ceramics and metals. “Asking about the Edge Wood-Huang Xiaoming Woodcarving Art Exhibition” is the third exhibition in this series.
The exhibition will last until May 6th, and visitors are welcome to enter the exhibition hall to start a journey of woodcarving culture. (Zhejiang Provincial Museum)
