2021 is a fruitful year for archaeology in Hangzhou.
You can get a glimpse of these wonderful achievements from the recently released winners list of “Important Archaeological Discoveries in Zhejiang in 2021” and the “Discovering Hangzhou 2021 Annual Inventory of Archaeological Work and Unearthed Cultural Relics Exhibition” opened at the Hangzhou Museum of Arts and Crafts.
The “Top Ten” Archaeology in Zhejiang in 2021 was released.
Recently, the 2021 Zhejiang Archaeological Important Discovery Selection Meeting was held in Hangzhou, and the meeting selected 10 important archaeological discoveries in Zhejiang in 2021. Among them, the Municipal Institute of Archaeology has achieved excellent results of “seven entries and two evaluations”.
Which seven items were selected? According to the chronological order of archaeological discoveries, seven archaeological research projects are: Zhujiaqiao Site II, Tiaotou Site, Yuhang Jingshan Ancient Tomb, Jingci Temple Site, Fuyang Xindeng Ancient City Site, Lin ‘an Tianmu Kiln Site (Xiejia No.1 Kiln Site) and Hangzhou Linping Niujiao Village Ancient Haitang Site.
Which two items were finally selected as “2021 Important Archaeological Discoveries in Zhejiang”? The answers are: Tiaotou Site in Yuhang, Hangzhou and Xindeng Ancient City Site in Fuyang, Hangzhou.
“Because they are profound.” Archaeologists said.
Tiaotou Site is located 400 meters northeast of Tiaotou Village, Zhongtai Street, Yuhang District, at the junction of mountainous and hilly areas and plain areas. The stratum of the site is divided into ten layers, covering the Spring and Autumn Period, Western Zhou Dynasty, Late Shang Dynasty, Maqiao Culture, Guangfulin Culture and Liangzhu Culture. Among them, the late Shang Dynasty is a period with the clearest settlement structure, well-preserved relics and the richest unearthed relics. Many well-preserved stone models, bronzes and suspected copper ingots, gravels, charcoal and other relics directly related to copper casting were unearthed. In the late Shang Dynasty, when the bronze culture was highly prosperous, Hangzhou, located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, first discovered a clear bronze casting settlement site in the late Shang Dynasty, which is of great significance for exploring the transition from the late Neolithic period to the early Bronze Age around Taihu Lake, and understanding the archaeological cultural connotation, settlement and social organization form, and civilization evolution mode of the Bronze Age.
Fuyang Xindeng Ancient City Site is located in Xindeng Town, Fuyang District. After archaeological excavation, the ruins of Tang, Song and Ming and Qing Dynasties found in Xindeng Ancient City have clear structure, obvious overlapping relationship and good preservation. This also shows that the geographical position of the ancient city has hardly changed much since the Tang Dynasty. The results of this excavation confirmed the historical authenticity and inheritance of Xindeng Ancient City, and confirmed the uniqueness of the ancient city’s surrounding mountains and one-sided city walls, which laid an important foundation for the restoration and exhibition of the ancient city and the protection of its later application for heritage, and also provided important materials for studying the structure and construction technology of the city walls and gates since the Tang Dynasty.
“Discovering Hangzhou 2021 Annual Inventory of Archaeological Work in Hangzhou and Unearthed Cultural Relics Exhibition” was launched.
Some citizens want to ask: This year, Hangzhou took the exam..How charming the ancient times are, do ordinary people have a chance to see the unearthed cultural relics in relevant sites?
Here’s your chance! A few days ago, “Discovering Hangzhou 2021 Hangzhou Archaeological Work Annual Inventory and Unearthed Cultural Relics Exhibition” was officially launched. This exhibition is jointly created by Hangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum (China Museum of Knife, Sword, Fan and Umbrella), showing seven key archaeological projects in Hangzhou in 2021 and more than 400 unearthed cultural relics, presenting the phased achievements of Hangzhou’s archaeological work in 2021 with a brand-new perspective, vivid exhibition form and in-depth interpretation, and taking you into archaeology and exploring Hangzhou.
The exhibition design of this exhibition is closely related to the archaeological theme, with “exploration square” as the design element, and the table top of the exhibition hall is divided from the ground in the form of archaeological exploration square, which visually seems to be entering the “archaeological site”. At the same time, it assists rich interpretation of archaeological terms, local scene sand table, multimedia exhibition items, including reading three-dimensional models of ancient tombs, animation of stone model casting copper, interviews with archaeologists, etc., taking into account academic and interesting.
There are countless key exhibits. For example, the primitive porcelain pots of the Western Han Dynasty at Zhujiaqiao site, the muddy pottery pots of the late Shang Dynasty at Tiaotou site, and the green glazed banana leaf pattern pillows of Jizhou kiln in the Song Dynasty at Jingci Temple site are so wonderful that they are waiting for you to review. The exhibition time is from now until March 27, 2022, and the exhibition place is the temporary exhibition hall on the second floor of Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum.
