On the evening of April 13th, as one of the brand concerts of the 7th China Symphony Spring, a large-scale original symphony “Above the Tide” created by Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra was grandly staged at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. “Above the Tide” is the orchestra’s key original play this year. It is written to celebrate and present the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with the theme of depicting the “important window” in Zhejiang. It blooms brilliantly on the high-standard stage of “China Symphony Spring” and has received rave reviews.
Directed by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, this work took the orchestra two years to plan and build, and was commissioned by composers Xi Qiming, Yu Yang and Wang Danhong to jointly create it. The artistic director and conductor of the orchestra, Zhang Yi, gave a performance. The whole concert vividly demonstrated the artistic characteristics of the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra’s “Walking on Two Legs”. In the first half of the performance, the lively “Festival Overture” enthusiastically aroused the emotions of the audience. Later, the famous flute players Jiang Guoji and suona player Liu Wenwen worked closely with the orchestra to interpret the bamboo flute and the orchestra “357”, “Whipping the whip to urge the horse to transport grain” and the suona concerto “Ode to Kirin”, and the superb performance skills and rich expressiveness of the musicians continued to win.
In the second half of the performance, the original work “Above the Tide” kicked off in the clear harp sound. From the beginning of the overture (Tide Up in Zhejiang), people seem to hear the echo of history from the ripples and water waves. Entering the first movement (The Tide of Sailing: Revolutionary Story), melodious horn, sonorous rhythm and undulating melody remind people of the revolutionary tide that started in Nanhu, Zhejiang. During the surging tide, the magnificent picture scroll and heroic atlas painted with blood for 28 years have cast glory and become eternal in the 28-gun salute in founding ceremony, New China. In the second movement (the tide of opening: the story of development) and the third movement (the tide of thoughts: the story of the new era), the beautiful and high-spirited melody shows the spirit of Zhejiang, showing the spiritual coordinates of Zhejiang’s development: the confident rhythm and melody, showing the rhythm of China and Zhejiang. In the last movement (Tide to the Sea: A Story of the Future), the music, which is sometimes soothing and sometimes forceful, is extremely tense. Traditional music is interwoven with grand symphonies, as if the tide of the times is rolling forward, which constantly inspires people to forge ahead: Qiantang, a prosperous city in Qian Fan, has become more prosperous and developed in a wider world, and Zhejiang has resonated with the development rhythm of China in the new era. Under the guidance of outstanding leaders, Zhejiang, which is constantly competing, will continue to set off a rolling Qian Jiangchao with reform, openness, exploration and innovation, and rush forward!
Tracing back to the source of the avenue, rising from Qiantang, rising above the spring tide and swallowing rivers and mountains, the orchestra successfully brought Zhejiang music and stories to Beijing this time. Zhang Yi, artistic director, commented this way..Price “Above the Tide”: Main melody works can also have high artistry, reflecting the common pursuit of people in different eras and the same era. Guo Yijiang, the head of the orchestra, expressed his expectation for the work in this way: “Above the Tide” depicts a vivid and magnificent musical epic picture scroll, which is a sincere gift to the centenary birthday of the party. The orchestra is willing to praise with affectionate music, integrate artistic conception, spirit of the times and realistic context, and let the story of the party and the story of Zhejiang enter the hearts of more people, condensing the majestic power of warmth and forge ahead.
