In order to cultivate the new generation of actors and music talents and create future stars of the Japanese opera stage, Pingyang County Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports recently decided to join hands with Zhejiang Art School to open a Japanese drama class to carry out joint enrollment for fresh primary school graduates across the country.
Hejiao, also known as Hetune, was born in Pingyang County and has a history of more than 400 years, which is the second largest type of drama in Wenzhou and a unique genre in Pingyang, and is one of the 384 existing local dramas in the country. In 2009, he was inscribed on the list of intangible cultural heritage of Zhejiang Province, and in 2019, it was selected into the Complete Collection of Chinese Opera Genres.

Zhejiang Art School (Technical High School Affiliated to Zhejiang Art Vocational College) was founded in 1955, and has cultivated a large number of traditional theater masters and intangible cultural heritage talents for Zhejiang and even the whole country. The school has successively cooperated with well-known troupes such as Zhejiang Xiaobaihuayue Opera Troupe to integrate school education and class education to jointly cultivate performance talents who meet the needs of traditional drama inheritance and development in the new era.

The Japanese opera class jointly offered by the two companies plans to enroll 30 opera performers (waka), including 18 men, 12 women, and 5 opera music (waopera music accompaniment) students, and tailor-made professional training courses. Students who meet the requirements and successfully pass the initial examination will go to school to complete the re-examination procedures with the “Re-examination Notice” and related materials, and the primary school is exempted from the cultural examination. The professional re-examination is carried out according to the intention of applying for the major, and then the professional score line is delineated according to the characteristics and needs of the major, and the online candidates are admitted according to the professional score from high to low, and the admitted students must sign a directional training agreement with the Pingyang County Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports.
It is worth mentioning that all students in this drama class will enjoy a 6-year tuition waiver policy, and students with excellent character and learning will receive scholarships every academic year. After graduation, in accordance with relevant national policies, it is planned to admit some outstanding students on merit based on the establishment of state-owned enterprises. Students who are not admitted will choose to continue their studies or self-employment in accordance with the relevant policies.
The cooperation between Pingyang County Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports and Zhejiang Art School aims to promote the cultivation of outstanding actors and music performance talents of the new generation of Japanese opera, and effectively enhance the ability of intangible cultural heritage items to protect themselves, inherit and develop themselves.
