On the evening of March 4th, the large-scale documentary “Craftsman’s Craftsmanship” was broadcasted on the CCTV10 Science and Education Channel’s “Exploration and Discovery” program. This broadcast focuses on introducing the shell carving skills of the Dongtou Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Project. The representative inheritors of the provincial intangible cultural heritage, Ye Yongfu, Zheng Dazhi and Wang Weidong, the representative inheritors of the municipal intangible cultural heritage, and Chen Canyuan, the representative inheritors of the district intangible cultural heritage, all made appearances in the documentary. The documentary showcases the processing, cutting, design, carving, and other processes and finished products of the Dongtou shell carving.
This film is based on the excellent traditional handicraft culture of China, showcasing the development and current situation of numerous handicrafts and beneficiaries on the land of China. Dongtou Beidiao was founded in the 1940s, and on the basis of Beidui, it initially specialized in producing flower and bird, landscape, character, Bogu, and other art screens. Later, through bold innovation by technical personnel and workers, it gradually developed and produced shell carvings such as bracelets, earrings, and jewelry boxes. To date, it has applied for 164 patents, The product variety and process technology are leading in the field of shell carving nationwide. Shell carvings such as “Spring Colored Shell Carving Seat Screen” have won multiple awards such as the Arts and Crafts Award of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Silver Award of the China (Zhejiang) Arts and Crafts Exhibition. The seashell sculpture “Sail Anchor Interdependence” exhibited at the Wanghai Tower exhibition has been named the largest seashell sculpture in China by Guinness World Records. In 2007, “Beidiao” was included in the second batch of intangible cultural heritage list in Zhejiang Province.
