Zhang Tingji (1768-1848) was a leader in the field of epigraphy and calligraphy in Jiaxing during the light years of the Qing Dynasty. His original name was Rulin, and his word was Shun ‘an, and he was a disciple of Haiyue ‘an. In his later years, his eyebrows were more than an inch long, and he was brilliant and lustrous, so he named himself the eyebrow longevity old man. He was Xie Yuan in the third year of Jiaqing (1798). Later, due to repeated attempts to be a scholar, he lived in seclusion in build house and engaged in academic research and artistic creation. He specializes in poetry, textual research and collation of fine epigraphy, and is especially good at appreciating cultural relics. He has a rich collection of Ding Yi, tablets, calligraphy and painting, and also works in calligraphy. There are some works handed down from generation to generation, such as the ancient artifacts collected in Qingyige, the occasional seal of Qingyige, and the collection of Guixintang.
On the opening day of the exhibition, Zhang Tingji Jinshi Calligraphy Seminar was held in Tianyige Museum. Tong Yanfang, a master of Ningbo literature and art, introduced Zhang Tingji’s artistic life, elegant friends, and his character of valuing affection over things and helping the elderly and the young. Chen Feirong, a research librarian at Tianyige, introduced Zhang Tingji’s unique handwriting Rent Collection Book in Tianyige, from which we can see the economic source of his collection and his earnest and meticulous attitude towards life. This collection is relatively rare, and the guests present are scrambling to observe it and are amazed. Subsequently, some collectors and Zhang Tingji research experts also exchanged views on their surviving works.
“Immortality of Eyebrow Life-Collection of Zhang Tingji’s Stone Calligraphy Works” was launched at the same time of the exhibition, edited by Zhang Tingji Research Association, edited by Tong Yanfang, and published by Shanghai Calligraphy and Painting Publishing House.
