The Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology released the excavation of the Taoyuan site in Linfen, Shanxi Province, on Wednesday.
Among them, the pentagonal house site of the Yangshao period, which dates back more than 5,000 years ago, is an important discovery of this excavation.
Taoyuan site is located at the north junction of Taoyuan Village, south, Jiade Township, Yaodu District, Linfen City, Shanxi Province, and southeast of Sitou Village, Dengzhuang Town, Xiangfen County.
From July 2016 to the end of December, Shanxi Institute of Archaeology, together with Shanxi University, Linfen Cultural Relics Archaeology Station, Xiangfen County Cultural and Tourism Bureau and other units, carried out a large-scale rescue excavation of the site.
This excavation found more than 300 Miaodigou Culture, XiWang Village type, Erlitou Culture in the Xia and Shang period, and more than 300 ash pits and pits in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, 1 pottery kiln, 5 house sites and 15 tombs, with the most abundant remains in the Yangshao period.
A total of three pentagonal houses are F1, F2 and F5.
From the archaeological discoveries in recent years, the pentagonal houses appeared in the site of the Yangshao period.
At present, the site of this house is mainly found in western Henan, southern Shanxi and Guanzhong areas, with the Fenhe and Weihe Basin as the core distribution area, radiating outward, extending to the Longdong area of the upper reaches of the Jinghe River, and to the north to the northwest Luliang area of Shanxi. The era is concentrated in the middle of Yangshao Culture, which is a characteristic relic of the culture of this period.
The F1 excavation and the other two pentagonal houses found at the site enrich the material materials for the study of settlement morphology at Taoyuan site.
Its discovery provides a new material for the research on the shape, technology and function of the middle Yangshao buildings in southern Shanxi, and once again confirms the important position of southern Shanxi in the Miaudigou culture.
