Hangzhou, 17 Feb (Xinhua) — The site of Shangshan Mountain, the origin of human cultivation of rice, the site of Jingtou Mountain, the “ancestor of Hemudu,” and the site of the ancient city of Liangzhu, which testifies to the history of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization… As a major province of cultural relics, Zhejiang has continuously made major archaeological discoveries in recent years, constantly enriching people’s understanding of Chinese civilization. A modern archaeological and cultural relics protection base began construction near the famous Liangzhu ancient city site on the 16th, which will build a “new home” for many cultural relics unearthed in recent years.
The Zhejiang Archaeology and Cultural Relics Protection Base is located in the Liangzhu Culture and Art Corridor in Yuhang District, Hangzhou, near the Liangzhu Ancient City Ruins Park and Liangzhu Museum. The base has a total construction area of 37,000 square meters and a total investment of about 183 million yuan, which is divided into four parts: special warehouse for cultural relics, cultural relics sorting and turnover warehouse, cultural relics protection and restoration warehouse, scientific research experiment room and ancillary supporting room, according to the requirements of archaeological specimen warehouse in key areas of the country to be constructed, will be equipped with archaeological specimen storage, protection and restoration, analysis and testing, micro-environment control, data storage and other modern facilities and equipment, for archaeological research, specimen preservation and storage, display and use and other aspects of archaeological work to provide basic guarantee.
In October last year, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage issued the “14th Five-Year Plan for the Protection and Utilization of Great Sites”, specifying that Zhejiang and other provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities will build archaeological specimen warehouses in 20 national key areas. Yang Jianwu, member of the leading party group of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and director of the Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, said that the Zhejiang Provincial Archaeology and Cultural Relics Protection Base will concentrate on collecting, researching and displaying cultural relics specimens unearthed by Zhejiang archaeology, integrating the functions of archaeological heritage protection, cultural relics sorting and restoration, archaeological science and technology, etc., to build a southern base of China’s ancient material culture gene bank.
