On April 24th, the State Administration of Market Supervision released the National Metrology Comparison Project in 2022, and the Class A National Metrology Comparison Project “Medical Electron Accelerator Radiation Source Metrology Comparison” declared by Zhejiang Institute of Metrology was among them.
This measurement comparison plan focuses on assessing the technical ability of various measurement technical institutions to solve the problem of traceability of radiation sources of medical electron accelerators under the existing measurement standard configuration. National comparison of radiation sources of medical electron accelerators is helpful to evaluate the verification status of radiation sources of medical electron accelerators in provincial and municipal metrology institutes (institutes), as well as the correctness and standardization of the use of measurement standards by inspectors, to investigate and improve the technical level of measurement verification of radiation sources of medical electron accelerators, to understand the equipment status and real measurement ability of laboratories, and to strengthen the research on the measurement standard system of ionizing radiation, which is of great measurement basic significance to ensure the unity, accuracy and reliability of the unit system and to enhance professional technical ability.
The radiation source of medical electron accelerator is a kind of radiotherapy equipment, which accelerates electrons by microwave electric field and generates high-energy rays (electron beam or X-ray). It is a large-scale medical equipment used for long-distance external irradiation radiotherapy activities in human medical practice. It has the characteristics of high dose rate, short irradiation time, large radiation field, good dose uniformity and stability, and small penumbra area, and is widely used in radiotherapy of patients with tumors or other lesions. High-energy X-rays have the characteristics of high penetrability, low skin dose and high radiation uniformity, and are suitable for the treatment of deep tumors. Electron beam penetration is relatively low, and it is often used to treat superficial tumors.
Since the establishment of the standard in 2014, the Provincial Metrology Institute has continuously strengthened the reliable traceability of radiation sources of medical electron accelerators to ensure the accuracy of equipment, improve medical quality, ensure the safety of people’s livelihood and help build a well-off society. This comparison is of great significance. It is an inspection of the rationality of standard configuration and the technical ability of personnel in the process of radiation source value transfer of medical electron accelerator in various metrology technical institutions. It objectively reflects the completeness of ionizing radiation transfer system and helps to promote accurate and reliable value transfer.
