On the morning of May 15th, the Zhejiang New Era Free Trade Port Research Institute, jointly built by Zhejiang University and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Commerce, held a unveiling ceremony at the School of Economics of Zhejiang University. Ren Shaobo, Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhejiang University, Sheng Qiuping, Director of the Zhejiang Free Trade Office and Director of the Provincial Department of Commerce, He Lianzhen, Vice President of Zhejiang University, and Zhang Qianjiang, Deputy Director of the Zhejiang Free Trade Office and Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Commerce jointly unveiled the plaque for the research institute. Huang Xianhai, Dean of Zhejiang New Era Free Trade Port Research Institute and Dean of Zhejiang University School of Economics, presided over the ceremony. The heads of relevant departments of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Commerce, leaders of relevant schools of the School of Economics of Zhejiang University, and leaders of the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Commerce attended the unveiling ceremony.
In his speech, Ren Shaobo pointed out that as the special economic functional zone with the highest level of openness, the Free Trade Port is an upgraded version of the Free Trade Pilot Zone, shouldering the major mission of comprehensively deepening reform and boosting regional development levels. Strengthening research on free trade issues is the joint responsibility of the government and high-level universities. Facing the future, the research institute should fully utilize the good cooperation mechanism between the department and the school, strengthen top-level design, innovate management methods, integrate resources from all parties, and build a first-class high-end think tank in China as soon as possible.
Sheng Qiuping pointed out in his speech that we should fully leverage the advantages of gathering high-end think tank experts, carry out forward-looking and strategic research on free trade zones (ports), cultivate research talents in free trade zones (ports), and provide reference for decision-making by the provincial party committee and government. The Provincial Department of Commerce will continue to integrate relevant resources in the business field, establish a shared open platform, and vigorously support the development of the Free Trade Port Research Institute.
Huang Xianhai introduced the strategic positioning and development ideas of the research institute. The research institute will rely on innovative departmental school cooperation to promote political education, disciplinary development, and platform construction, create high-end think tanks and academic highlands, and contribute wisdom and strength to the school’s “double first-class” construction and service for Zhejiang’s economic development.
On July 12, 2019, the Department of Commerce of Zhejiang Province signed a cooperation agreement with Zhejiang University to jointly build the Free Trade Port Research Institute. Over the past six months, after intensive preparations by the School of Economics at Zhejiang University and the Zhejiang Institute of Commerce, the Zhejiang New Era Free Trade Port Research Institute has been officially established today, with offices located in the School of Economics at Zhejiang University and the Zhejiang Institute of Commerce, respectively, to overcome the impact of the epidemic.
The Zhejiang New Era Free Trade Port Research Institute will seize the opportunity of building an “important window” in the pilot free trade zone and better serve the deepening of reform and opening up in the zone. The next step will adhere to the policy of “broad vision, high starting point, strong foundation, and operability”, innovate through institutional mechanisms, integrate domestic and foreign research resources, organize first-class research teams, and undertake four major tasks: academic research, decision-making consultation, forum activities, and talent cultivation, Strive to build into an important policy consulting and research base for the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and Government, an influential strategic research think tank for free trade zones, and a future-oriented high-end research platform for free trade ports, in order to contribute to the high-quality development of free trade zones (ports).Contribution.
