March 23rd this year is the 1055th anniversary of Mazu’s birth. On May 11th, the 6th Dongtou Mazu Peace Festival was held in the main venue of Dongsha Village, Bei ‘ao Street. More than 60 compatriots from Taiwan Province, Baodao, and tourists and believers from all over the country gathered together to pay tribute to Mazu and share happiness.
Lin Qiong, deputy secretary of the county party committee, Lin Haishan, deputy director of the Standing Committee of the county people’s congress, Ye Jinli, deputy county magistrate, Zhang Shizhong, vice chairman of the county CPPCC and other leading guests attended the event.
At 9 o’clock in the morning, Mazu’s blessing ceremony kicked off. The local people prayed for good weather, peace in the four seas, and kindness to all the people in accordance with traditional ceremonies such as Mazu icon leaving the palace, chanting sacrificial rites, worshiping the sky, worshiping the sea, worshiping Mazu, and awarding the flag by fishing boats.
After the ceremony, the main venue also set up supporting activities such as praying for peace, watching folk performances, giving peace ceremonies, buying fishermen’s products, guessing fishing lanterns, etc. Through various interactive ways such as planting blessing trees, making peace-praying sachets, eating peace banquets and watching fishermen’s programs, visitors attending the Peace Festival can experience Mazu culture and authentic cave customs.
In order to avoid the “one-day economy” of festivals, Dongtou has made great efforts to develop tourist interaction projects and long-term attractions. In addition to retaining traditional activities, Yuanjue Sub-venue is also working hard to develop tourist interaction projects and long-term attractions. After successfully testing the market-oriented operation of “Mazu Peace Blessing Tour” for five times, we jointly launched a series of tourism projects with Wenzhou International Travel Service and Dongtou New Realm Tourism Company, namely “Fuze Hundred Islands-Parents Blessing Smart Tour, I will take my parents to travel safely”, so that tourists from all over the world can participate in praying and receiving peace gifts.
There are 22 Mazu Tempel in Dongtou, among which Yuanjue Shajiao Village and Beiao Dongsha Mazu Palace are the most representative. In 2010, Dongtou Mazu Festival was selected as a national intangible cultural heritage expansion project.
