In order to comprehensively improve the level of protection, management and utilization of large sites, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage recently issued the “14th Five-Year Plan for the Protection and Utilization of Great Sites”, proposing that by 2025, the overall pattern of protection and utilization of large sites will basically take shape, the overall safety of cultural relics and the surrounding environment, and important achievements will be made in archaeological research, protection management, display and utilization, education and leisure, inheritance and innovation, communication and exchange, etc., forming a number of replicable and generalizable demonstration cases.
The plan points out that it is necessary to strengthen the archaeological work of large sites. Deeply promote the research on the origin exploration of Chinese civilization and the major project of “Archaeological China”, support the preparation of medium- and long-term archaeological work plans for important sites, systematically and continuously carry out archaeological mapping, investigation, exploration and excavation, and build a national basic information and data platform for large sites.
In terms of improving the level of display and utilization of large ruins, the plan proposes to implement the large site display and upgrading project and the large site research and study project, and introduce a number of large site display and utilization projects that prove the origin of civilization, highlight cultural inheritance, witness ethnic integration, and confirm mutual learning between civilizations.
According to reports, during the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period, China has initially formed a protection and management model for large sites that conforms to China’s national conditions and has Chinese characteristics. Remarkable results have been achieved in archaeological research, protection management, open services, team building, and institutional innovation of large sites. However, there are still deep-seated problems in the protection and utilization of large sites in China, such as unbalanced investment in archaeological research, weak overall foundation, insufficient theoretical research and scientific and technological guidance on protection and utilization, and lagging behind in the transformation of scientific research achievements.
