Recently, the Shanghai International Shipping Research Center released the “2021 Global Port Development Report” (hereinafter referred to as the “Report”).
The report ranks the top 50 global ports in 2021 based on cargo throughput. Among the top 50 ports, China holds 28 seats (including Hong Kong), while the remaining ports are distributed in 11 countries including Australia (3 ports), Brazil (2 ports), South Korea (4 ports), and the United States (4 ports). In 2021, the production situation of the top 50 global ports was good, with a total cargo throughput of 16.47 billion tons, an increase of 4.2% compared to the same period last year in 2020.
According to the report statistics, in 2021, Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan will maintain the first in the world with a throughput of 1224.05 million tons, and it is also the only one billion ton port, with a year-on-year growth rate of 4.4% in 2021; Port of Shanghai and Port of Tangshan ranked second and third respectively with the throughput of 769.7 million tons and 722.4 million tons, with growth rates of 8.2% and 2.8% respectively.
Among the top 10 ports, China occupied 8 seats, Qingdao Port and Port of Guangzhou ranked 4th and 5th respectively, Port of Suzhou ranked 7th, Port of Rizhao and Port of Tianjin ranked 9th and 10th respectively. Port of Singapore and Port Hedland in Australia ranked sixth and eighth respectively.
It is worth noting that among the top 50, Jiangyin Port delivered a super high growth rate of 36.6% in 2021, leaping from 25th place in 2020 to 16th place. Jiujiang Port has also jumped to 10 places and entered the top 50 ports list with a growth rate of 26.0%.
Port of Chongqing in China (up 5 places), Port Klang in Malaysia (up 5 places) and Tanjung Parapas Port in Malaysia (up 7 places) also rose rapidly in the rankings; Zhenjiang Port, Jiangsu Province, China (down 14 places), Hong Kong Port, China (down 9 places), Hangzhou Port, China (down 6 places) and Dampier Port, Australia (down 5 places) dropped significantly. Novorossiysk Port, Russia, was pushed out of the list.
According to the analysis of the report, China is an important central node in the global industrial chain, with a large economic volume and developed industrial manufacturing industry. Thanks to effective prevention and control of the epidemic, production and manufacturing as well as the overall smooth operation of residents’ lives, major ports generally have higher cargo throughput levels compared to foreign ports.
