On the afternoon of March 12th, Andrew Robinson, Consul General of New Zealand in Shanghai, and his party visited the Provincial Science and Technology Department. Li Yong, director of the Provincial Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs, met with the delegation and discussed how to further strengthen scientific and technological cooperation between the two sides. Shen Minmin, Policy Advisor of New Zealand Consulate General in Shanghai, Lisbeth Jacobs, Chairman of Innovation Research Institute of Auckland University, New Zealand, and relevant personnel from overseas Chinese Affairs Office, Science and Technology Cooperation Office of Provincial Science and Technology Department, and Provincial Foreign Science and Technology Exchange Center attended the discussion.
Li Yong said that Consul General Luo Anzhu visited the Science and Technology Department as soon as he took office and visited Zhejiang for the first time, which showed his attention and expectation for the cooperation in scientific and technological innovation between the two sides. He expressed his heartfelt thanks for this. He said that Zhejiang is an economically developed coastal province, an open province integrated with the international community, and a vibrant and innovative province. In recent years, Zhejiang has implemented the innovation-driven development strategy in depth to promote high-quality economic development, with significant achievements emerging and innovation capability constantly improving. In the future, Zhejiang will further deepen reform and opening up, learn from developed countries with an open mind, and promote economic transformation and upgrading and innovative development through international scientific and technological cooperation.
Li Yong introduced that in recent years, Zhejiang has continuously expanded its international cooperation in scientific and technological innovation. At present, it has established scientific and technological cooperation relations with more than 50 countries and regions, and officially signed intergovernmental memorandums on scientific and technological cooperation with seven countries and regions. Zhejiang and New Zealand have a good foundation for scientific and technological cooperation, and have cooperated in joint research and development, cooperation in running schools and transformation of achievements. For example, the scientific research institutions of universities in Zhejiang Province, represented by Zhejiang University, cooperate with New Zealand universities in agricultural science and technology, computer and food safety. In addition, since the China Innovation Research Institute of the University of Auckland settled in Hangzhou in 2017, it has successfully held two China-Singapore international technology innovation summit forums, which has been highly valued by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Li Yong said that our province has issued “50 new policies on science and technology” and is studying and formulating a global action plan for precision cooperation in science and technology. He hopes to take the opportunity of Consul General Luo Anzhu’s visit to further strengthen scientific and technological cooperation with New Zealand: First, deepen exchanges and cooperation at the government level and establish a pragmatic and long-term cooperation mechanism; The second is to jointly promote the development of the China Innovation Research Institute of the University of Auckland, and make this platform a real source of scientific and technological innovation through multi-form, multi-level and multi-field cooperation, and introduce more Zhejiang enterprises to New Zealand; The third is to build more communication platforms to promote the project landing, enhance mutual trust through both sides, and achieve fruitful results in cooperation.
Luo Anzhu said that this is his first visit to Zhejiang and he is willing to become an ambassador for scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation between the two sides. In addition to agriculture and food safety, New Zealand also has certain advantages in engineering science, medical and health care, software design, artificial intelligence and other fields, which has a certain degree of fit and cooperation space with Zhejiang’s industrial development and demand. In particular, the China Innovation Research Institute of the University of Auckland is regarded by the New Zealand government as a model for foreign scientific and technological cooperation, hoping to play a greater role as an important platform in scientific research cooperation and project introduction between the two sides in the future. He is also willing to encourage more New Zealand scientific research institutions and high-quality projects to settle in Zhejiang, and make contributions to enhancing scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges between the two sides.
It is understood that China Innovation Research Institute of the University of Auckland is the first research institute of the University of Auckland in China, and it is also the only external window for the transformation of scientific research achievements of the University of Auckland in China. Since its establishment nearly two years ago, it has been committed to promoting the joint research and development of the University of Auckland, well-known domestic universities and large enterprises, as well as the industrialization of advantageous R&D projects in China. At the same time, it has actively introduced some successful and advantageous start-ups from New Zealand into China.
