The sky is the cover, and the land is the Lu.
A straw hat, a cushion, a pen and a notebook are standard items for archaeologists.
It’s in the dog days, but whether it’s the infrastructure construction site accompanied by the roar of machines or the wild relics that are constantly buzzing around, there are often the figures of Hangzhou archaeologists-they braved the high temperature and worked outdoors all the year round, carefully excavating.
At the beginning of this year, Hangzhou issued an archaeological solicitation order for the whole country-recruiting workers engaged in archaeological excavation and research. For a time, the resumes of “top talents” from all over the country came like snowflakes, and after fieldwork, 10 people were finally shortlisted. Nowadays, these young archaeologists are fighting in the fields. They dig in the soil with hand shovels and race against time. Their “high temperature” has a different story.
Zhang Hengyuan, who graduated from the Department of Archaeology and Culture of Zhejiang University, is one of the new forces recruited through field examinations. After he joined the company, he was arranged to engage in archaeological excavation in the field. At present, Tianmuyao site in Lin ‘an is his “main battlefield”, and at the same time of excavation, he is also carrying out the sorting and research work of the project.
“Cleaning the soil, shaving, taking photos, drawing … all these jobs need to be done outdoors.” Zhang Hengyuan said.
Every step needs to be carefully handled by archaeologists, not only to carefully extract the cultural relics without missing a detail, but also to grasp the time. While properly carrying out the protection work, carefully record the newly revealed relics and relics and keep their most original information.
Outdoor, simple awnings are the “hot cakes” of archaeological sites. Zhang Hengyuan said that the first thing to do when you go to the construction site every day is to hold up umbrellas and awnings with your partners and put away simple tables and chairs. This is a mapping point that can block the sun, and it is also a day’s on-site mapping work. Ready.
In addition to parasols and awnings, the excavation site is more of a temporary sunshade net. Although the material is only a few bamboo poles and black mesh cloth, it can always support a whole shade with the clever cooperation of everyone. Square exploration, plus a few sunshade nets, is the most distinctive existence of archaeological sites in summer.
Working in the field all the year round, it is normal to be exposed to the hot sun in summer. Archaeologists are often “fully armed”-sun hats, gowns, ice sleeves, sunscreen, etc. are all necessary basic equipment, and sometimes there are “high technologies” such as portable small fans.
Sun protection and hydration are the key. With the increase of temperature, the water cups that Zhang Hengyuan and his colleagues carried with them also changed, from the initial small thermos cup to the largest, barreled cold kettle.
“It is a kind of happiness and satisfaction to take a gulp at work.” Zhang Hengyuan said. The current construction site is the place where I started my internship from the second year of research. After I graduated and was admitted to the institute, I was also arranged here to continue the excavation of the Tianmu kiln site group. Although the weather is hot, I am very happy and have a sense of accomplishment every time I find new relics and relics in the exploration party, which makes me more or less ignore the hardships of the working environment.
Zhang Hengyuan said that high-temperature excavation is indeed a bit uncomfortable. Some excavation sites have advanced the “work” time to 5 am. Even so, the situation of heatstroke has recently increased, so everyone will temporarily adjust the time of work or transfer to indoor finishing.
In recent years, Hangzhou has conscientiously implemented the policy of “protection first, rescue first, rational utilization and strengthening management”, comprehensively implemented the system of “archaeology first, then transfer”, and comprehensively carried out archaeological exploration pre-work step by step and in stages throughout the city.
“In order to cooperate with and serve the urban infrastructure construction, the excavation task of the archaeological institute is arduous and urgent, and the field work is cold and hot, and it is difficult to have weekends.” The relevant person in charge of the Hangzhou Institute of Archaeology said that in addition to indoor finishing in rainy days, it is necessary to clean up and excavate outdoors at other times. In addition, archaeological projects are distributed in various urban areas of Hangzhou, and most of them are in remote suburbs, so that archaeological workers are mostly resident in archaeological workstations or excavation sites in various districts, so the field has become the “main battlefield” for everyone’s work.
“Straw hat and long dress” is only for the elegant reproduction of the site.
Archaeologists who are interested in the field are continuing to help promote the source exploration project of Chinese civilization with actions, showing Zhejiang’s responsibility and Hangzhou’s responsibility, and depicting their own color for the development of Hangzhou’s urban development and cultural relics protection.
