Hangzhou is a beautiful historical and cultural city, a tourist city with two world cultural heritages, and the first capital of arts and crafts awarded by UNESCO in China. Generations of skilled craftsmen have left many precious arts and crafts skills for later generations through their industrious hands.
In 2012, before Hangzhou was founded as a nation, the municipal government funded and issued policies to support traditional arts and crafts, and launched a five-year “Arts and Crafts and Folk Arts Inheritance Plan”, which openly recruited five state-level arts and crafts masters in five arts and crafts categories in Hangzhou nationwide. First, it attracted 192 applicants from nearly 20 provinces and cities and Taiwan Province. After primary selection, professional qualification examination and interview, 24 people stood out.
At the turn of 2017 and 2018, it coincides with the five-year end of the arts and crafts master apprentice learning project. We report the achievements of the “Passing on the Fire” project in the past five years in the form of a joint exhibition between teachers and students, and as a new starting point, we will continue to carry forward China’s excellent traditional culture and protect and pass on arts and crafts skills.
The achievement exhibition of “Passing on the Fire-Master of Arts and Crafts Learning Arts” is sponsored by Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Office, Hangzhou Economic and Information Commission, Hangzhou Garden Cultural Relics Bureau and undertaken by Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum. The exhibition consists of five units: Xiaoshan Lace (Zhao Xixiang), Machine Embroidery (Wang Wenying), Ceramics (Ji Xigui), Hand Embroidery (Chen Shuiqin) and Bronze Sculpture (Zhu Bingren). 91 pieces/sets of representative works of master and apprentice are selected, as well as works completed by cooperation between master and apprentice. At the same time, pictures and videos will be interspersed in the exhibition hall to review the strong feelings of teachers and students in the past five years.
Appreciate the art and give back to the society. At 9:30 a.m. on December 22nd, the opening ceremony of the donation ceremony and achievement exhibition, “Passing on the Fire”-master of arts and crafts will be held in the hall of China Knives and Swords Museum. At the ceremony, five national masters of arts and crafts will sum up their five-year apprenticeship, and the apprentices will finish their graduation works attentively and donate their works to repay their teachers and give back to the society. In addition, 20 pieces/sets of works created by apprentices will also be donated to Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum, where the achievements of these five years will be treasured.
High-level students settle in, and they are passed on. The five-year “inheritance plan of arts and crafts and folk arts” has come to an end, but the inheritance and development of arts and crafts will continue as always. In order to let more Hangzhou citizens know and love handicrafts, and solve the problem that handicraft lovers have no way to find a teacher, at present, the Master Studio of Hangzhou Museum of Arts and Crafts has welcomed three new members, namely Ni Yanqian, Master Ji Xigui’s apprentice Zhen Jinghu and Master Chen Shuiqin’s apprentice Wang Mei. In addition, in the master studio on the second floor of Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum, there are 19 kinds of arts and crafts including Xiaoshan lace, Xihu silk umbrella, paper cutting, stone carving, pyrography, etc. The audience can not only observe the masters’ on-site creations at close range, but also experience the unique charm of arts and crafts skills with their hands-on teaching.
It is particularly worth mentioning that this exhibition of “Passing on the Fire-Master of Arts and Crafts Learning Arts” will launch online interaction for the first time. The audience can scan the codes on the spot, take part in interesting answers and five arts activities, and the participants can also get exquisite souvenirs from the museum.
