One of the steps has disappeared. Photographed by reporter in the border town
Although the typhoon “Plum Blossom” has passed, the secondary disasters brought by it are far from over. On September 18, the reporter received a report that part of the facilities of Baiyun Bridge, a provincial cultural protection unit located in Zhongcun Village, Luting Township, Yuyao City, were damaged in the typhoon.
One step has disappeared
The reporter saw in Nakamura that the local damage caused by typhoon “Plum Blossom” is being further cleaned up, and there are also fallen trees and garbage washed to the bank on both sides of the stream. A villager told the reporter that it had been cleaned up for two days, but it had not been completed.
Baiyun Bridge is located at the east end of Zhongcun Village. The stone slabs on both sides of the bridge at the south end have fallen off in many places, and a step has disappeared.
“The water was all over this place at that time. It was the first time that I saw such a big water in my life.” Mr. Zheng, a villager, said to the reporter while making a gesture that the damage to the bridge slab and steps was only discovered after the flood. At that time, the relevant departments immediately checked.
Baiyun Bridge has a history of more than 1000 years
Baiyun Bridge is located at the junction of Haishu District and Yuyao City. Due to its unique architectural style and cultural value, it was listed as the sixth batch of provincial cultural relics protection units in 2011.
According to public data, Baiyun Bridge was initially built in the Zhenguan Period of the Tang Dynasty (627-649), and the existing bridge was rebuilt in the 16th year of Guangxu Period (1890) of the Qing Dynasty.
Baiyun Bridge is a single span stone bridge with a total length of 25.3m, a bridge foundation height of 1.1m, a bridge deck width of 3.8m, a clear span of 12.65m, an arch rise height of 6.6m, 22 stone steps in the north and 24 stone steps in the south. Baiyun Bridge, like a rainbow, straddles the stream lightly, only 50 meters away from the Xiansheng Temple.
The shape, decoration and sculpture of Baiyun Bridge are very artistic. The mountains on both sides are towering, and the deep streams and torrents under the bridge are just like flying in the air corridors. The bridge couplets are engraved on both sides of the bridge opening. The western couplet is: “Yin Yu is the boundary of the land, two leeks and three elites are singing to benefit; Gong Zheng is the village link, celebrating Anlan for thousands of years.” The eastern couplet is: “The white water crosses the rainbow waist, and the road leads to the north and south; the cloud village leaves a shadow of the moon, and Yin Yu is painted at the boundary.” The three characters “Baiyun Bridge” are inscribed horizontally on the outside of the arch plate of the bridge top, and the small character “Guangxu Gengyin” (1890) is inscribed on the right corner.
“The architectural style of Baiyun Bridge is very consistent with the beautiful scenery of Jiangnan, which has a certain historical value and artistic value for studying the history of bridge architecture in eastern Zhejiang. In October 1987, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Yuyao City.” Mr. Yang Gucheng, a well-known cultural protection expert in our city, told reporters. “The passenger road is far away with the clouds and flowing water, and the land is high with the clouds. The wild brook is clear and shallow, crossing the dangerous bridge, and the path is like a withered vine climbing into the purple sky.” This is the poem of the scholar Louyao in Ming Dynasty, which refers to the Baiyun Bridge.
The design maintenance scheme has been started
“This bridge is antique and has a strong sense of time. Standing on the bridge, you can see the beautiful scenery of Zhongcun, and then look at the gurgling water under the bridge. A picture of Jiangnan style is naturally created, which is really worth seeing all the time.” Ms. Zhou, a tourist, said with emotion when seeing the reporter interviewed here.
At the scene, many tourists felt deeply sorry when they saw the damage of Baiyun Bridge. “I don’t know if it will affect the safety of the bridge. It should be identified and repaired as soon as possible!” Mr. Zheng, a tourist, told reporters.
In the afternoon of September 19, the reporter got in touch with the relevant persons in charge of Yuyao Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Office and Luting Township, and got the reply that they sent people to the scene to check at the first time after receiving the report. It was initially believed that the typhoon “Plum Blossom” had caused some damage to the surface of the ancient bridge, but the structure of the bridge had not changed and it was still safe. As for the damaged part, the Cultural Relics Department has taken the lead in inviting the Shanghai Institute of Ancient Architectural Design to identify and design the restoration plan, and then repair it.
“The Baiyun Bridge was damaged by water before, and was rebuilt later. The bridge wall was also poured with cement,” Zhu Yongning, an expert in civil cultural protection in our city, said in an interview.
“This incident once again sounded the alarm bell for the safety of cultural relics in the field, especially when encountering natural disasters, corresponding protective measures should be taken for cultural relics placed in the field to prevent further damage,” Mr. Yang Gucheng said.
