In order to enhance citizens’ awareness of cultural relics protection and better remember history, on the “Cultural and Natural Heritage Day”, Ningbo China Port Museum organized the “14th season of exploring ancient places and seeking seclusion-going into Zhenhaikou Coastal Defence Site”. More than 40 citizens took part in the day’s activities.
Zhenhai has been a battleground for military strategists since ancient times, and is known as “Haitian Xiongzhen” and “throat of Zhejiang and Zhejiang”. Since the middle of the Ming Dynasty, the north and south sides have successively experienced wars against Japanese invaders, such as Japan, Britain, France and Japan, leaving behind many heroic achievements and rich and precious coastal defense sites. Under the guidance of the staff of the museum, the citizens first visited Zhenyuan Fort, which is located next to the Xiaojiang River. Zhenyuan Fort was built in the 6th year of Guangxu (1880). It is located in the southwest and faces the northeast. It originally had 5 gun holes and 11 barracks. It was rammed with concrete, with a concave plane and a trapezoidal elevation. Most of the main parts of the fort collapsed, and the barracks were lost. Now only the ammunition depot in the northwest corner is relatively intact. After visiting Zhenyuan Fort, the citizens visited Hongyuan Fort in the northern foot of Lishan Mountain, Jingyuan Fort and Pingyuan Fort in Jinji Mountain.
In the afternoon, the citizens visited the Coastal Defence History Memorial Hall in Zhenhaikou. Under the careful explanation of the museum’s lecturers, the citizens learned about the coastal defence history of Zhenhaikou for more than 2,000 years, and successively visited the heroic scenes of Chinese sons and daughters fighting against foreign aggression, such as Japan, Britain, France and Japan. At the end of the trip, the citizens also visited Anyuan Fort at the south foot of Zhaobaoshan.
After the activity, the citizens expressed glad you came, and at the same time realized that we should protect and cherish such precious historical and cultural heritage. This is not only a silent historical relic, but also a history that condenses the blood, tears and glory of the Chinese people. It is an important place for us to carry forward the Chinese people’s national spirit of loving the motherland, striving for self-improvement, not afraid of violence and perseverance.
