It was learned from the Beilun District Association for Science and Technology that at the Liebig Award ceremony held in Glasgow, England, on August 3, Zhu Yongguan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Ningbo City Ring Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, became the only winner. He is also the first Asian scientist to receive this award.
“Chinese soil scientists should always base themselves on the land of China, focus on challenging scientific problems, make 100-fold efforts, persevere and make scientific research results recognized by international peers.” Academician Zhu Yongguan delivered a speech at the award ceremony.
The Liebig Prize, established in 2006 by the International Union of Soil Science, is named after Liebig Liebig, the “father of organic chemistry” and the outstanding German scientist and educator of the nineteenth century. The award recognizes scientists for their outstanding contributions to applied research in soil science, especially new discoveries and technologies in areas such as improving food security, improving environmental quality, or protecting land and water development.
Zhu Yongguan is an eco-environmentalist, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and an academician of the Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries. He has long been engaged in environmental soil science and environmental biology research, and in recent years has been committed to using multidisciplinary methods to solve soil environmental problems, and has made significant contributions in the fields of soil pollution and remediation, soil microbial ecology and so on.
Zhu Yongguan has a deep relationship with Beilun District of Ningbo City. In 2011, he was the director of the Institute of Urban Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and he deeply connected with the Ningbo City and Beilun District Government to prepare for the establishment of the Ningbo Urban Environment Observation and Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In recent years, Zhu Yongguan has also put his main research team in Ningbo Chenghuan Station, established an urban soil and biogeochemistry research group, and achieved many international scientific research results, making great contributions to the development of Ningbo Chenghuan Station and the innovation support of Beilun District.
“Beilun is my second hometown, I have a deep affection for Beilun, and I have many hours to work in Beilun every month, no matter where I go, there are my concerns.” Zhu Yongguan said. In the future, he will continue to explore and research on soil microorganisms and soil pollution, make more contributions to the country, and will spare no effort to gather wisdom and cohesion for the innovation and development of Ningbo Chenghuan Station and Beilun District.
