An ancient tomb group was discovered in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, which spanned the Eastern Han Dynasty, Western Han Dynasty, Six Dynasties and Sui and Tang Dynasties. At present, 50 tombs have been excavated and cleaned, and more than 200 pieces of cultural relics have been unearthed.
Recently, Hubei Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Xiangyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology carried out rescue excavation of Dongwangjiaxiang site cemetery. The site is located in Xiangyang High-tech Zone, 1.5km to the southeast of the former site of Deng Guo, and 63 ancient tombs were found in the early exploration.
On the 8th, the reporter saw at the scene that archaeologists were cleaning up two earth pits in the site. Among them, a tomb can clearly see the pyramid-shaped mound and burial chamber. According to the archaeological staff, this tomb is the largest earthen pit tomb discovered in this round of excavation. The burial chamber is 12.6 meters long and 2.4 meters wide, and the whole burial chamber is about 3.3 meters deep. At present, it has been excavated to 1.5 meters deep.
About 2 meters to the east of the tomb, archaeologists are still cleaning up another earthen pit tomb. The coffin storage position in the burial chamber is beginning to take shape, and one earthenware pot and one earthenware kettle are found in the bottom niche, all of which are well preserved. In this earthen tomb, a bronze hook and a piece of bronze mirror were unearthed. The bronze hook is beautifully shaped, the tiger pattern is lifelike, and the word “light” on the bronze mirror fragment is clearly visible.
In a tomb of the Eastern Han Dynasty excavated earlier, archaeologists found that there were doorposts and door leaves at the entrance of the tomb. The doorposts and door leaves were hollow portrait bricks, and the door leaves were carved with exquisite small fish, persimmon, rice and evergreen trees. The doorposts were carved with halberds and evergreen trees.
Zhou Ting, the person in charge of the archaeological project of Wangjiaxiang Ruins Cemetery, said that after two months of rescue excavation, 50 ancient tombs have been cleared and excavated, and more than 200 pieces of bronzes, porcelain, pottery and other cultural relics have been unearthed. The tombs span the Western Han Dynasty, the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Six Dynasties and the Sui and Tang Dynasties. There are earthen pit tombs and brick chamber tombs. Some brick chamber tombs are well preserved, and the combination of unearthed objects is also very complete, which is of great significance for studying the evolution law of Han and Tang tombs. (End)
