Editor’s press
The Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on the Great Achievements and Historical Experience of the Party’s Centennial Struggle adopted at the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China emphasized that “the excellent traditional culture of China is a prominent advantage of the Chinese nation, and is the foundation for us to stand firm in the turmoil of world culture. It must be inherited and carried forward in combination with the new conditions of the times”.
We focus on the four museums (academies) that the General Secretary has visited during his inspection and research, and ask the responsible person to tell the story of implementing the important directive spirit of the General Secretary, inheriting and promoting excellent traditional culture, and see how the excellent traditional culture in various parts of our country is constantly revitalized to promote the construction of a socialist cultural power.
Inspire national pride by learning from history
Narrator: Han Zhanming, Curator of the Capital Museum
February 25, 2014 is an unforgettable day for the first blogger. “The purpose of the historical museum exhibition is to witness history, learn from history and enlighten future generations”. The important speech of the General Secretary was loud enough to inspire us to practice our duties.
The rich historical and cultural heritage is a golden card of Beijing. The first museum undertakes the important task of “collecting the history of the capital and passing on Chinese and foreign civilization”, and has a rich collection of cultural relics. In recent years, we have planned a series of exhibitions such as “Baishan · Heishui · Haidongqing” and “1420: From Nanjing to Beijing”, which have enhanced people’s cultural confidence in Beijing’s profound historical heritage.
We also planned and organized high-level temporary exhibitions with the theme of “Interpreting Brilliant China and Mutual Learning of World Civilizations”, such as “Sailing in Clouds to the Sea – Special Exhibition on the Maritime Silk Road”, “Cultural Heritage on the Heavenly Road – Tibetan History and Culture Exhibition”, so that the audience can feel the long history of Chinese civilization and have a deep understanding of the excellent traditional culture of China that is diversified and integrated.
At present, we are actively serving the construction of the National Cultural Center in the capital, planning and organizing a permanent exhibition on the central axis of Beijing, and actively participating in the construction of the Great Wall National Cultural Park in Beijing.
How can historical wisdom better nourish the present and life? We have created a distinctive brand of “reading the city” for young people. By inviting citizens to participate in exhibition planning, scholars to lead students to visit on the spot, artists to guide students to create and other means, we have improved the scientific and cultural literacy of young people and led the public to explore the excellent traditional Chinese culture. These activities have enhanced people’s sense of pride and confidence in their dialogue with history. As one of the audience said in a message, “I feel the beauty of creation here, and I am lucky to have a good understanding of history in this peaceful era. Thank our ancestors for their rich heritage.”
Make the Museum a wonderful university
Narrator: Yu Hongjian, President of Xi’an Museum
“A museum is a big school.” On February 15, 2015, the General Secretary came to Xi’an Museum to watch the exhibition and gave important instructions during his research in Xi’an. For more than six years, the General Secretary’s mandate has guided us to make the exhibition fascinating and tell the story of cultural relics deeply.
The civilization of Xi’an is, to some extent, a concentrated Chinese civilization. Over the past few years, we have planned more than ten original theme exhibitions, such as “Fat Around, Thin Swallow — Her Life in Chang’an, Han and Tang Dynasties” and “The Most Beautiful Chang’an in Qiaogong University”. By means of landscapes, models, images, etc., we have made it fashionable to “brush” in Xi’an Museum. Many foreign friends come from far away and become regular visitors.
In January last year, we launched the exhibition “Living happily in Chang’an — the life of Chang’an people in the capital of Tang Dynasty”, and selected more than 280 pieces (groups) of fine cultural relics of the Tang Dynasty from more than 110000 cultural relics collected in the courtyard, to fully reproduce the life of Chang’an people in the capital of Tang Dynasty. Many viewers left messages saying that they seemed to have personally felt the atmosphere and inclusiveness of the Tang Dynasty and the positive and optimistic spirit of Chang’an people in the Tang Dynasty.
In recent years, we have also set up the “Lezhi School” education experience center, held “Lezhi Lecture Hall” and other public cultural activities, and opened the “Chang’an Ancient Music” Intangible Cultural Performance Hall, which has made many post-90s and post-00s fall in love with the rising “antique”.
Since last year, in the face of the COVID-19, we have provided online services to the public through “cloud exhibition”, “cloud live broadcast”, “cloud class” and other ways, and also launched a series of audio programs, “Leju Chang’an Online Cloud Exhibition – Twelve Hours of Fumao Agents”, so that the public can listen to it with confidence and determination to overcome the epidemic.
Now, in this university, the Museum, we not only feel the splendor of the past, but also look forward to the beauty of the future, so that everyone can move forward to the future more firmly and forcefully.
Protect the splendid cultural heritage
Narrator: Qin Bo, Curator of Chifeng Museum
On July 15, 2019, the General Secretary came to Chifeng Museum to learn about the excavation and protection of Hongshan culture and other prehistoric cultures, as well as the historical evolution of Qidan Liao culture and Mongolian Yuan culture. The attention of the General Secretary to history and culture is unforgettable.
For more than two years, we have continuously launched cultural relics exhibitions inside and outside the museum to explore the stories behind cultural relics.
At the beginning of 2021, we and the Zhejiang Provincial Museum jointly held a large-scale cross provincial exhibition “Double Splendor – Hongshan Liangzhu Culture Exhibition”. Hongshan Culture and Liangzhu Culture are both representative cultures in the middle and late Neolithic Age. They have their own origins, one north and one south. They met for the first time in the exhibition, and they complement each other. After the opening of the exhibition, through the comparative exhibition of more than 100 cultural relics in Liangzhu, Hongshan, the audience can directly see the development of the prehistoric culture of the north and south 5000 years ago, and perceive the formation process of the pattern of pluralistic integration of Chinese culture.
In order to better protect cultural relics, we also launched the restoration of precious cultural relics in the collection last year. The gold painted black stationary lamps in the collection of the museum in the Song Dynasty were originally 14 pieces of fragments, and some of the porcelain pieces were decorated with relatively complete printed gold foil, which is a national secondary cultural relic. In December 2020, we entrusted the research group of the School of Archaeology, Culture and Museum of Peking University to inspect and repair the cultural relic, restoring its original appearance, and the related academic research was also carried out.
As a link between history and the public, the museum bears people’s recognition of Chinese culture and expectations for a better future. We will protect the splendid cultural heritage in the museum and let them talk about the past and inspire the future.
Green and blue in succession, making research and exhibition more sustainable
Narrator: Liang Zhimin, Curator of Guangxi National Museum
On April 27 this year, the General Secretary came to Guangxi National Museum to visit the Zhuang culture exhibition. As the General Secretary said, “In this hot land of Guangxi, the people of all ethnic groups represented by the 12 ethnic groups who have lived for generations have lived endlessly and watered the beautiful and rich land of Bagui with diligence, courage and wisdom”. In order to show this precious history and beautiful style, we have built an exhibition system with three basic displays as the main line, namely, “Zhuang culture”, “drum sound through time and space – bronze drum culture”, and “colorful eight laurels – Guangxi national culture display”, to open a window for the public to understand national culture.
The bronze drum is an important cultural card of Guangxi, and it is also the boutique collection of our museum. As the museum with the largest number of bronze drums in the world, we have launched a series of new attempts in recent years. In 2020, we will establish the “Bronze Drum Research Center”, digitally protect 40 bronze drums in the museum collection, and build a three-dimensional database of bronze drums.
We have also innovated the talent training mechanism to promote the healthy growth of a number of young talents. Dr. Tang Shaoling is a young “returnee” we introduced in 2017. As soon as she entered the office, she took on an important task as the curator and village history investigator of Baishan Village History Museum, a poverty-stricken village, which was helped by our museum. In 13 field surveys in two years, each round trip is nearly 1000 kilometers. She has built a village history museum with clear village history context, rich exhibits and professional exhibition in poor villages, and also presided over the topic of “Baishan Village History Investigation and Research”.
Our pavilion is the main venue of the “Eight laurels Carnival of the Zhuang Nationality on March 3” in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In order to let the majority of netizens understand Guangxi’s national culture, we started the “Internet access” mode. This year, during the International Museum, we launched activities such as live webcast and “shake” to visit the People’s Expo, with nearly 400000 hits.
In the future, we will continue to innovate, and the stories of national unity and progress will be told well and deeply, so that all ethnic groups can hold together like pomegranate seeds.
