A jade cong, a shovel of earth, this is the groundbreaking ceremony of an archaeological base.

This morning, many major projects in various parts of Zhejiang Province held the groundbreaking ceremony at the same time. The reporter qianjiang evening news Hour attended this one in Liangzhu, whose full name is like this-Zhejiang Archaeology and Cultural Relics Protection Base, which officially started construction.
What is this base?
In a word, this is the largest archaeological warehouse in Zhejiang Province, with a total construction area of 37,000 square meters. It is equipped with modern facilities such as archaeological specimen storage, protection and restoration, analysis and detection, micro-environment control, data storage, etc., and provides basic guarantee conditions for archaeological research, specimen preservation, display and use.

Where is the base?
This place is between Liangzhu Museum and Liangzhu National Archaeological Site Park. Look at its next-door neighbors, all of whom are big names.
Now we go to Liangzhu Ancient City Ruins Park, and we can go to the visitor center at the south gate or the east gate. The base is on the edge of the old 104 National Road, that is, the north end of Liangzhu Port, close to the east gate of Liangzhu Ancient City Archaeological Site Park, while the south end of Liangzhu Port is in charge of Hangzhou, the National Edition Pavilion, and the second phase of Liangzhu Museum, which is across the river from the base. It will become the core part of Liangzhu Culture and Art Gallery.
Why do you want to build this super-large archaeological warehouse? Let’s talk about the background first.
In 2016, Zhejiang Cultural Relics Bureau signed a framework cooperation agreement with Yuhang District People’s Government to build Zhejiang Archaeological Heritage Exhibition Park (later renamed Zhejiang Archaeological and Cultural Relics Protection Base) in Liangzhu Site Management Area, and made it clear that Zhejiang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology was the project construction unit, and the project was also included in the 13th Five-Year Plan for Cultural Development in Zhejiang Province.
This base has been brewing for six years. Direction Ming, director of Zhejiang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, said that today’s background has also changed from six years ago. What is the biggest difference? Let’s draw out the key points in several documents-
On October 28, 2021, the General Office of the State Council issued the “Tenth Five-Year Plan for Cultural Relics Protection and Scientific and Technological Innovation”. Let’s look at Article 5: Improve the ability of archaeological work and the level of scientific and technological archaeology, and propose to build a national key regional archaeological specimen warehouse. Support units qualified for archaeological excavation in Shandong, Henan, Sichuan, Tibet, Shaanxi, Qinghai, Xinjiang and other provinces to build archaeological specimen storehouses in areas with rich sites and heavy archaeological tasks.
In the plan, it is clearly required to set the construction index of world-class archaeological institutions. As a local supporting unit, it is the ten major cultural relics provinces in China.
Last September, the Central Committee compiled and issued the “Notice on Strengthening the Establishment Guarantee of Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeological Work Institutions”, which explicitly mentioned that the archaeological and cultural relics protection institutions in 10 major cultural relics provinces should be strengthened during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, and Zhejiang ranked fourth among them. There are now 281 national treasure units in Zhejiang, ranking fourth in the country.
Last year, there was another plan-the “14th Five-Year Plan for the Protection and Utilization of Great Sites” by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, which mentioned that it was necessary to focus on supporting the construction of archaeological specimen warehouses in 20 key national areas, including Zhejiang.
What I just said is the big background, and the core reason must be to enhance the strength of hard core and fill the shortcomings of archaeological industry development.
According to the direction, due to historical reasons, there are many problems in archaeological institutions in Zhejiang Province, such as lagging infrastructure construction, poor scientific research conditions, lack of warehouses and finishing sites, etc. The long-standing problem of insufficient space for preservation, restoration and scientific research of archaeological specimens has seriously hindered the rapid development of archaeological undertakings.
Although the existing 10 archaeological workstations in Zhejiang Institute of Archaeology have generally set up warehouses, the average area of each warehouse is less than 300 square meters, which is “full for a long time”. There are a lot of samples of organic matter such as pottery and porcelain pieces, and the vast majority of archaeological specimens can only be scattered in temporary warehouses in various places, which is inconvenient for storage, research and protection. Therefore, the safety pressure of cultural relics is very high.
The direction indicates that after the project is completed, there will be a qualitative leap in hardware.
Let’s spoil the structure of this large warehouse, which is divided into four plots and four targets. You can also understand it as four functional partitions.

The first is of course the most important: the establishment of a national key regional archaeological specimen warehouse (Zhejiang), which integrates the functions of centralized sorting, turnover, storage, protection and restoration, scientific research, display and utilization of unearthed cultural relics, and provides academic support for major projects and research topics such as “Exploration of the Origin of Chinese Civilization”, “Archaeological China” and “Zhejiang Archaeology’ Rising Star’ Plan”.
Second, build the southern base of China ancient material and cultural gene bank.
Based on the ancient material and cultural gene bank of China in Zhejiang, the Yangtze River Delta and even the southern region, we will build a platform for archaeological research and cultural exchange in the southern region. Direction, this gene pool, represents a region and a period of typical specimens.
So, do we ordinary people have the opportunity to visit or listen to lectures here?
The direction says that in the future, it can be organized and limited to let the public know about our archaeological work.
Third, Zhejiang Archaeology and Chinese Civilization Archaeology Digital Exhibition Area.
An important platform for realizing creative transformation of Zhejiang archaeological achievements by digital means. Tell the public about Zhejiang’s great history, demonstrate the origin of civilization, highlight cultural heritage, and prove mutual learning of civilizations.

The fourth block is to build a practice area for cultural relics research. Relying on the special facilities and places of study and exchange for entertainment, we will create excellent study and practice space and create excellent research projects.
Can there be an archaeological university hall here? Let’s imagine and look forward to it.
