To commemorate the 138th anniversary of Mr. Lu Xun’s birth, the Interpretation of Classics —— Zhao Yannian’s True Story of Ah Q Woodcut Illustration Exhibition, jointly sponsored by Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall and Huzhou Museum, was grandly opened in the exhibition hall of Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall on September 25th.
Lu Xun’s True Story of A Q profoundly reveals the root of the national ideology of ancient China, opens up the cultural salvation and enlightenment of modern China, and becomes an eternal classic in the history of modern China literature. More than half a century later, the woodcut illustrations of The True Story of A Q created by Mr. Zhao Yannian made a profound interpretation of Lu Xun’s works from the perspective of art, which opened another brand-new door for us to interpret the classics and became the art classics after the literary classics.
Zhao Yannian (1924—2014) was born in Huzhou, Zhejiang. Professor of China Academy of Fine Arts. He used to be the director of China Artists Association, consultant of Zhejiang Artists Association, president of Zhejiang Printmaking Association, etc. His works involve woodcut, comic books, comic books, etc., among which printmaking has the greatest achievement. His major masterpieces include Rice Grab, Lu Xun’s Portrait, Sixty Pictures of the True Story of Ah Q, etc. Zhao Yannian’s black-and-white woodcut, with concise knife techniques, always keeps pace with the times. Early works mostly focused on reflecting people’s hardships. After the “Cultural Revolution”, Zhao Yannian created a large number of illustrations for Lu Xun’s literary works, engraved with more than 170 works of Lu Xun’s theme, and also made artistic works of Lu Xun’s image. He was one of the most industrious artists in China printmaking industry.
This exhibition focuses on 60 works of The True Story of Ah Q, as well as the sample sketches made by Zhao Yannian during his many visits to Shaozhou in 1970s, and the manuscripts that recorded his creative mental journey. The exhibition comprehensively interprets the “classics” through the combination of frames, display cabinets and multimedia. (Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall)
